After nearly a decade on tour, Akutsu captured his maiden JGTO victory at the prestigious Gateway to The Open Mizuno Open in May 2025. In a dominant performance, he fired four rounds in the 60s to win by four strokes, securing a spot in The Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

His victory was the highlight of a consistent campaign that saw him finish 26th on the JGTO Money List. Akutsu proved his win was no fluke with several other high finishes, including a tied-4th at the LOPIA Fujisankei Classic and a tied-5th at the Sansan KBC Augusta. A player known for his perseverance, he arrives in New Zealand as a proven tour winner.
