Huge galleries were present at the 2004 New Zealand Open held at the Remuera Golf Club, in Auckland on January 6 to 9.
Though torrential rain cancelled the Pro-Am, weather during the championship was hot and sunny. Twenty-six players broke par on the first day. Iwasaki-Smith led by one stroke with 65, a score equalled by Turner next day. Frank Nobilo held a share of third place and hopes were high that he would claim his first New Zealand Open title.
But it was Craig Jones however who took the lead with 65 in the third round while several contenders fell by the wayside.
Though one under par, a score many leading players were unable to match in the last round, Nobilo did not hole the vital putts he desperately needed and a one-over-par 72 was enough for Jones to take the win.
