Volunteering Leads to Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity

The New Zealand Open has long been powered by its dedicated volunteer community, and in 2025 one first-time volunteer was rewarded with the ultimate prize — a spot in the 2026 New Zealand Open Pro-Am.

2025 was Tim Grant’s very first year volunteering at the New Zealand Open, with his only prior experience being at the LIV Golf event in London back in 2022. A professional hiking tour guide based in Lyttelton, he found himself with a rare week off between tours in Queenstown and decided to put his passion for golf into action by volunteering.

“As a tourism professional, I saw it as a great opportunity to see the inner workings of a major event, make some great contacts, and spend a week in paradise,”

As part of the SBS Bank Volunteer programme at the New Zealand Open, volunteers can put their name into the draw to win a spot in the New Zealand Open Pro-Am field to play alongside a professional during the New Zealand Open—truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. So, when Tim’s name was announced as the winner of the Pro-Am draw, the reality didn’t immediately sink in.

“I was shocked — it didn’t properly register at first. That night was just a blur of shaking hands and meeting some of my childhood heroes like Jeff Wilson, Stephen Fleming, Grant Elliott, and Richie McCaw.”

The prize came as a total surprise, as he hadn’t even known about the draw before the volunteer orientation. “I was just doing it for the experience — the vouchers to play the championship course at Millbrook Resort were already more than enough.”

News of his win spread quickly, especially among friends. His first call was to his golf buddy in London, who instantly offered to fly back and caddy. “The same offer came from four more friends, so now we’re having a ‘caddy cup’ the Monday before the Open to see who earns the right to carry the bag — and take the blame for my terrible shots!”

Currently playing off an 18 handicap, his biggest goal for the Pro-Am is simple: “Not to make a fool of myself! If I can hit a solid shot off the first tee, most of the nerves will disappear and I’ll just be able to enjoy the experience with family, friends, and what I now call my 500-person volunteer cheer squad.”

He’s also aiming to sharpen his game before the big week. “I’d love to get down to a 15 handicap before the tournament.”

As for a dream pairing? “Ryan Fox is a hero of mine — the way he represents New Zealand on the international stage is incredible. But I’d be equally excited to play alongside one of the tournament ambassadors, like Stephen Fleming or Israel Dagg.”

For Tim, the highlight of 2025 was discovering the sense of community that exists within the volunteer team.

“Even though it was my first year, I could see how strong the volunteer family is. So many people come back year after year, and talking with players and caddies, they all rave about how much they love the New Zealand Open. I can definitely see myself still turning up to volunteer in 2070.”

His advice to anyone considering signing up? “Just get involved without expectations. It’s such a rewarding experience — and who knows, you might even find yourself winning the biggest cherry on top like I did.”

Registrations for the SBS Bank Volunteer programme at the 2026 New Zealand Open are now open. Roles are available across all areas of the tournament — from course marshals and scorers to drivers and beyond.  No golf experience is required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to be part of the team. All volunteers receive a briefing, tournament apparel, and an unforgettable experience at one of New Zealand’s premier sporting events.
