Journey to the Open: A Story of Dreams, Community and Golf

In its first year, the New Zealand Open Charitable Trust's Journey to the Open has unfolded across Central Otago as a new opportunity for local youth. The initiative represents a collective commitment to fostering ambition, development and connection through the game of golf.

The initiative, crafted by the New Zealand Open Charitable Trust (NZOCT), invites junior golfers aged 16 to 19, and handicaps under 18, from clubs across Central Otago to step onto the fairways of the iconic New Zealand Open and compete for a chance to play alongside professionals in the Pro-Am at the 105th tournament in 2026.

The adventure for one lucky player has begun at one of three qualifying events that were hosted at local golf clubs — Arrowtown, Cromwell, and Wanaka — where the top performers progress to a thrilling final at Millbrook Resort early next year. There, the stakes rise: a coveted NZOCT trophy waits, and the three best finalists will contest a Closest to the Pin shootout that will secure one lucky player a fully-paid experience in the pro-am field at the New Zealand Open itself.

For many of these young athletes, it’s the culmination of years of practice, mentorship from club members, and friendships forged on shared fairways. It’s a chance to feel the electric buzz of professional play and to see what’s possible when the community supports ambition.

At the heart of this is the New Zealand Open Charitable Trust, led by its chair, Brian Cadzow. With deep roots in both golf and community work, Brian has helped lead the Trust as it launched its first major project designed to nurture the next generation of golfers and strengthen the bond between the region and its premier tournament.

“Journey to the Open embodies everything we hoped the Trust could achieve,” Brian said.

“We wanted to open doors for local youth, bring our clubs closer together, and use the excitement around the New Zealand Open to create unforgettable experiences. This initiative celebrates our community and gives these young golfers something truly special to strive for — a chance to stand alongside the professionals they admire.”

From humble beginnings at their home clubs to the wide expanse of Millbrook Resort’s rolling greens, the Journey to the Open is more than a series of golf events — it’s a story of community spirit, youth ambition, and the enduring power of sport to shape lives.

And for one lucky finalist this year, it might just be the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of excellence both on and off the course.

Following the series of highly contested qualifying events across the region, nine players have secured their place in the Journey to the Open Final.
  • From the Arrowtown event, Yoonae Jeong, Jackson Hughes and Cayden Ede progressed after strong performances.
  • The Cromwell qualifiers were led by Jacob Maisuria alongside Trey Whitu and Riley Gill.
  • While the Wanaka event saw Toby Gallie, Archie Duncan, and Johnny McBride complete the final field.
Together, the group represents passionate junior golfers from across Central Otago who will now compete for honours in the Journey to the Open Final.
